BR Reader Question: Milk Alternatives

I can't drink milk. I hate it!!! I have been drinking vanilla soy milk, but now I found the almond milk... What do you think??? Should I continue drinking it or change??

The view on cow's milk is varied between the public and among health professionals. From what I have read, studied and believe I am on milk's side. I am well aware that we are the only mammals that drink the milk from another mammal...blah, blah, blah. Isn't that amazing though? There is something found in nature that provides us with the perfect combination of protein and calcium. There are other properties in milk that are health promoting too. Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) for example, has been shown to have anti-cancer properties, aid in fat loss, and is linked to diabetes management. One study at Harvard found that women who consumed three servings of dairy per day weighed less. Milk also has a perfect combo of casein and whey for muscle building. Plus, you know the benefits of chocolate milk. Stick to just three servings per day and aim to go organic!

With that being said, I understand that their are those who are lactose intolerant or truly hate the taste. If you are lactose intolerant I honestly believe that you can "heal" your gut and tolerate dairy better. If you hate the taste, perhaps you can learn to like it? That is to be determined. My 14-month-old struggled with GERD as an infant. After a lot of "experimenting" we put her on soy formula. When she turned one she'd spit up cow's milk and now won't drink it. We've tried soy and coconut milk. Although she loves cheese and yogurt and we serve a good amount of leafy greens, she just prefers water.

When it comes to milk alternatives there are A LOT available. Nothing really compares to soy, just stick to the unflavored kind. Coconut milk has more fat and only 1 gram of protein. Plus, even the original version has sugar {the added kind}. Almond milk is really almond butter watered down. Additionally, according to the fat content an 8-oz serving only contains 4 almonds. That leaves a bunch of other stuff to make up the rest of the volume.

Hope that helps! Keep 'em coming!

  1. Can you give some advice on how to "heal" yourself from lactose intolerance?? I have mild lactose intolerance (I can't drink milk, eat certain cheeses, or have milk shakes), but I can eat aged cheese, Greek yogurt, and certain ice cream brands. Sometimes I can even stand a little milk on my cereal if I don't have soy milk in the fridge.

  2. I have been hearing online lately that people really like hemp milk. I myself who only drinks milk when it is already in foods or beverages wouldn't bother going out and buying it just to drink if. But I think it sounds interesting.
