Running and a Giveaway!

{he uses only organic fuel : )}
Saturdays are crazy around my house, so I do my "long" run on Friday mornings before my husband goes to work. This friday he had to leave early (5:45 AM) therefore, I planned my 6 mile run for Saturday. Well, my Grandpa passed away friday night - we were at the hospital until midnight. Consequently, all I had time for was 3 miles. Today I did my 6 mile run (my longest so far) and it was rough! It is a little ironic that my iPod started playing, "I am in misery" during the last mile. I think I am now at the point where I need to really concentrate on nutrition before, during, and after. This is one of the main reasons why I am doing this. I get those questions all the time. I can give people advice from what is recommended by sports nutritionists and what I learned in sports nutrition courses, but this is one of those things that can be so individualized. So, I am asking what you do.
What do you eat (if you do eat) before, during, and after a long run?
At what point during a run do you need something?
What do you pick?

  1. So before a run I don't usually eat anything, since I'm a morning exerciser. (Mind you, I'm definitely not a long distance runner.) I also don't eat anything in the middle for that reason. Afterwards I usually finish with a sensible breakfast, like oatmeal or something.

  2. I am an evening runner for the most part, but when I do run in the mornings I try and drink about 8 ounces of water a half hour before the run and eat a whole wheat piece of toast with some jam to get me started. When I get back I just drink a lot of water. But at night I generally eat dinner and run about an hour after that. I don't usually eat after a run. But when i do it is typically a green smoothie:) I don't think I am doing anything great, but this is what works for me. I just kind of go with what my body is saying. If In the morning I wake up and I'm feeling good to go, I just go, at night if I get home and I am just needing something I mix myself up a green smoothie. It really just depends:)

  3. I am a morning runner. I have one scoop of cytomax for the carbs and 1/2 scoop of whey isolate protein in 8 oz of water. The formula is predigests so that it gets to your muscles quick. Right after my run, I have the exact same thing to quickly refuel. I use this during my entire marathon training. When runs get over 2 1/2 hours I start using gu's

  4. I like having a banana, and maybe some toast with peanut butter before a run. I've learned for me that any cereal in the morning before a run makes me feel super queasy... Afterwards I try and eat some protein and just chug water. I'm not a major long distance runner, but when I did Ragnar, I popped some of those energy gummy things halfway and it seemed to help :) I NEEEEEED to get rid of these last few lbs and just get back into running shape, so I hope hope hope I win!! :)

  5. Love your Blog! I am just getting back into running(finally 6 weeks post-baby!!) I usually have to run around 4:30am because my husband leaves early so I don't usually take the time to eat anything. If I run later, I have a quick protein shake and then I have some sort of protein after along with my omega and vitamin supplements!

  7. I make these: http://www.seriouseats.com/talk/2011/04/not-really-cookingbaking-kind-of-food---clif-nectarlara.html

    They work quite well, and they are much cheaper than the real deal. I follow your blog via friend connect and google reader.

  8. I am a morning runner and it makes me sick to eat before (maybe I just choose the wrong things). After I have wheat toast, fruit and some cream of wheat usually. Then I chug my water throughout the day. I have RA so it makes it difficult to run long distances but I am hoping to keep going further! I would love to work with you, Devrie. And even if I don't get picked I would love to hire you to talk with my family and I. :)
